Far countries strategy and Elevator sector
The success story of Turkey's exporters in foreign trade in the last 20 years is concentrated in the neighboring and surrounding geography. 2/3 of exports are made to relatively close countries. Turkey's average export distance is below the world average. This situation necessitates the introduction of a special foreign trade strategy for distant countries. Action should be taken to increase the export range, which is an average of 3 thousand 65 kilometers, to more than 4 thousand 744 kilometers, which is the world average. Turkish exporters, who focus on new market diversity by taking the traditional product-market structure of our exports to an advanced stage, turn their routes to distant countries. With this understanding, the Ministry of Commerce of the Republic of Turkey, as a result of analytical studies, determined 18 countries that are more than 2,500 kilometers away from Turkey, whose imports from the world are over $60 billion and whose share in imports is less than 1% as target countries for the development of trade within the scope of the Far Countries Strategy.
These countries are; USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Chile from the American continent, China, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam from the Asian continent, South Africa from Africa, Nigeria and Australia from Oceania. These countries, which have a 64 percent share in the world economy, make up 47 percent of the world's goods imports and 35.6 percent of the world's service imports. The countries identified with these magnitudes constitute an important potential for Turkey to develop its trade on the basis of the win-win principle.
In terms of the elevator sector, being able to sell products and services to the countries mentioned above is extremely important for the development of the sector and exports. The elevator sector, which is one of the rare sectors of Turkey that has a foreign trade surplus, makes its exports to the surrounding countries intensively. When we look at the countries where the most package elevators and components are exported, which we have detailed in our file, we see that our export density is far below the world average of 4 thousand 744 kilometers in terms of distance. When we examine the 18 countries included in the scope of the Distant Countries Strategy by the Ministry of Commerce of the Republic of Turkey regionally, although some progress has been made in Central and South Africa, where elevators and components worth 13 million 432 thousand 851 dollars are exported in 2022, it seems that there is a long way to go in the USA, Canada, Latin America, and Oceania regions. While a total of 5 million 434 thousand 119 dollars worth of exports were made to the USA and Canada in 2022, we see that 3 million 798 thousand 125 dollars worth of package elevators and components were exported to Latin America and 1 million 2 thousand 89 dollars worth of package elevators and components were exported to the Oceania region.
