Russia–Turkey elevator trade: A Developing strategic partnership Introduction
Trade relations between Russia and Turkey have developed significantly over the years in areas such as energy, construction, agriculture and defense. In recent years, the elevator and vertical transportation systems sector has also become part of this cooperation network. The growing demand in Russia for elevator modernization and new construction projects, combined with Turkey's strong elevator equipment production infrastructure, has created a mutually complementary relationship between the two countries in this sector.
Trade volume and product groups
Turkey exports to Russia primarily elevator components, control panels, button systems, automatic doors, brake systems, cabins and motors. According to data from the Ministry of Trade and sector associations, Turkey's exports of elevators and parts to Russia in 2023 amounted to approximately $30 million. This figure represents an 18% increase compared to 2021.
However, rather than complete system sales, exports of module and component-based products are more prominent in elevator technologies. Products exported from Turkey to Russia are mostly used in collaboration with local companies in Belarus or Russia for assembly purposes.
The Russian market and the position of Turkish companies
With the withdrawal of Western brands, Russia has entered a phase of seeking new suppliers. This situation has created an important opportunity for Turkish companies. With the reduction of activities by global companies such as Otis, KONE, Schindler and ThyssenKrupp, Turkish manufacturers have been able to position themselves as alternative and competitive players in the Russian market. Turkish elevator companies operating in cities such as Istanbul, Konya, Bursa, Manisa and Izmir are attracting the attention of Russian distributors due to their high quality-price balance. Additionally, some Turkish brands have begun establishing a direct presence in the market by opening representative offices or technical service centers in Russia.
Supply chain and logistics advantages
Turkey's geographical location as a bridge between Europe and Asia, along with its alternative transportation options such as sea, land and rail, provides an important logistical advantage for trade with Russia. In particular, shipments via the Black Sea to the ports of Novorossiysk and Rostov have become cost- effective. The ports of Mersin, Samsun and Istanbul are critical exit points in this regard.
Customs, certification and regulations
Exports of elevator equipment to Russia require an EAC (Eurasian Conformity Certificate). Turkish manufacturers typically obtain this certification by working with testing organizations in Russia or managing the process through local representatives. However, a lack of experience and guidance in this area can sometimes slow down the supply chain.
Cooperation areas and joint projects
Joint production and assembly: Turkish companies are developing more sustainable solutions in the market by collaborating with local companies that manufacture or assemble in Russia.
Trade fair participation: Turkish companies are encouraged to participate in events such as Russian Elevator Week (REW) through organizations like Turkish Machinery.
Technical training and service agreements: Turkish companies are signing technical training agreements to provide maintenance and repair services in Russia for the products they export.
Future Outlook
With the development of relations between the two countries, trade volume in the elevator sector is expected to double in the next five years. Turkey has the capacity to play a role in large modernization projects in Russia, thanks to its competitive prices, modular design capabilities and customizable solutions.
Turkish companies are particularly well- equipped to meet growing demand in Russia in areas such as energy-efficient systems, smart control technologies and DISABILITY- FRIENDLY platform solutions.
